Similar to Dysport® and BOTOX® Cosmetic, Xeomin® is made of a diluted form of botulinum toxin type A, a protein that is designed to temporarily reduce muscle contractions in specific areas of the face, which helps to minimize fine lines and wrinkles. It is the newest neuromodulator on the market and differentiates itself by not including the accessory proteins found with BOTOX® Cosmetic or Dysport®. This is referred to as being “naked” – the value of a naked neuromodulator has yet to be determined. Xeomin® can also be used to treat hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating, and it is often particularly useful to treat this condition in the underarms. It is composed of a highly-diluted solution, so the risk of looking “frozen” is further lessened, especially when performed by our experienced plastic surgeon, Mark Pinsky, MD. Many patients can achieve the desired look with the minimal amount of Xeomin®. Dr. Pinsky is highly skilled at helping their patients achieve a refreshed, youthful appearance with Xeomin®.
Benefits of Xeomin®
A number of benefits can be experienced with Xeomin® treatment. This minimally-invasive treatment is intended to:
- Reduce fine lines, wrinkles, and creases in the face
- Delay the formation of future wrinkles by relaxing the facial muscles
- Treat hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)
- Minimize recovery time – most patients can resume daily activities shortly after treatment
- Provide a fast treatment option – most appointments are for one hour
- Offer results that can last for up to four months, and be maintained with occasional “touch-up” treatments
What Areas Does It Treat
Xeomin® can be used to eliminate the appearance of mild to moderate fine lines and wrinkles in many areas on the face. Some of the most commonly treated areas include:
- Forehead creases
- Crow’s feet
- Glabellar lines (frown lines between the eyebrows)
How Does It Work?
Over the years, repeated muscle contractions over the years from smiling, frowning, laughing, and crying can cause wrinkles and creases to appear on the face. Xeomin® is used to temporarily minimize muscle contractions and smooth out these lines and wrinkles; it can also delay the onset of future wrinkles by not allowing the contractions to occur over time. One of our physician assistants or doctors will inject Xeomin® directly into the desired treatment areas with a tiny needle, pinpointing the appropriate muscle or muscles. We can apply a topical numbing agent if needed to minimize discomfort, but the fineness of the needle and delicate touch of the injector often make topical numbing unnecessary. Even with 20 minutes of numbing, appointments usually take about one hour and are often completed in about 30 minutes or less. Immediately following treatment, you should experience noticeable results with full results typically appearing over the next three to seven days.
Many patients do not experience significant side effects, but minimal redness and swelling may occur at the treatment sites. These effects generally subside quickly. Most people can return to work and resume normal activities shortly after treatment. Patients can usually enjoy the benefits of Xeomin® for up to four months, and additional Xeomin® injections can maximize the benefits and help you maintain the effects for a very long period of time.
