New Study on Tummy Tuck Surgery Predicts Health Benefits

Fluctuations in weight or pregnancy can leave a woman’s midsection protruding or sagging with loose skin. This is a result of the over stretched skin and a weakening of the abdominal muscles. This can make a woman feel self-conscious, particularly as the warm weather approaches and bathing suit season looms right around the corner. Fortunately, there is a solution for a tummy that has lost its shape.

Abdominoplasty surgery (also known as a tummy tuck procedure) is among the most popular procedures offered in the field of plastic surgery. They are often preformed on women who have had children and request the procedure to restore their pre-baby figure. Tummy tuck procedures are also very popular among those who have experienced a significant weight loss and are left with a significant amount of over stretched skin. A tummy tuck removes the excess skin that has lost elasticity over time, tightening the abdominal muscles, and provides the patient with a trim and proportionate looking midsection. While tummy tuck procedures have long been known as an excellent solution to unsightly belly skin, recent studies show that there are added benefits to abdominoplasty procedures beyond the aesthetic.

A report, released by Physician’s Briefing, explains the results of a study conducted by Jennifer C. Fuller and her colleagues from Alameda Hospital in Los Angeles, CA. The team examined the factors associated with weight reduction in 60 patients undergoing abdominoplasty surgery. An additional 20 patients followed for an average of 29 months, were included in the analysis. The research team found that 75% of the patients studied attributed their weight loss to satiety. Long term weight loss was able to be predicted for patients who had a higher preoperative body mass index (BMI). In essence, the abdominoplasty helped appetite management. The team plans to continue their study to clarify exactly the factors that contributed to this appetite control and weight loss trend, but the immediate results are considered very exciting in the quest to weight management and decrease obesity.

It is a common misconception that cosmetic surgery treatments, such as abdominoplasty, are simply based on vanity. The benefits of self-improving surgeries, like tummy tuck procedures, boost self-confidence and can improve the quality of life for patients. With the preliminary news from the study Alameda Hospital preformed, an abdominoplasty procedure may offer other physical health benefits to promote a better quality of life.
